Questions about common challenges in children

It’s important to understand that all behaviors can be placed on a spectrum. On one side of the spectrum, there is the child who occasionally opposes in a healthy way. This opposition is useful for them to distinguish themselves from adults and to forge their own identity. At the other end of the spectrum, we find the psychiatric term oppositional defiant disorder. The child who has this diagnosis systematically opposes the vast majority of people in their life and in most contexts. Thus, the intensity and frequency of oppositional behaviors in a child with the disorder will be light-years away from the healthy opposition of the vast majority of children. It should be noted that the prevalence of oppositional defiant disorder according to various studies is between 2% and 16% of the population. It is therefore relatively uncommon to encounter children with a real oppositional defiant disorder.
It is advisable to first talk to his family doctor to ask for their opinion. Then, before starting medication assistance, it is desirable to investigate areas of the child’s life such as their diet, sleep habits, screen exposure, etc. to try to make changes that could reduce ADHD-related manifestations. Note that a child or adult can present one or a series of symptoms without necessarily having the pathology. Thus, a child can exhibit several manifestations related to ADHD without having it.
It is important to understand that melatonin does not act as a sleeping pill. Melatonin is naturally secreted by the pineal gland when night begins to fall. This hormone indicates to the entire body that it is now time to reduce our activity level. It is important to keep in mind that it is not trivial to give melatonin to your child. The list of harmful effects is long and Health Canada issues several caveats regarding use in children and adolescents. Starting to give melatonin to your child should never be a decision taken lightly. Before considering an option like melatonin, it is important to carefully examine the child’s bedtime activities, their lifestyle, diet, schedules, and needs. Several other less harmful alternatives exist.
